Manila, Philippines - CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera announced that the agency will not be accepting new scholars this year due to budget limitation amid the continuing COVID-19 crisis. He explained that their scholarship funds for the Unified Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education Act will not be released after it was realigned for the government's efforts against coronavirus.
Chairman De Vera said at a Senate hearing:
"We are giving out a notice that we will not be able to give merit scholarships for this school year,"
CHED will continue to fund their current scholars. The department already released P3.6 billion to fund the CHED's subsidy stipends to 120,000 scholars from 404 institutions, who were enrolled for the first semester of Academic Year 2019-2020.
He said
"Ang mapopondohan namin doon sa natitirang pera ay iyong continuing lang kasi kung tatanggap kami ng bago tapos hindi mabibigyan 'yong continuing, mas kawawa sila,"Aside from the funding for scholarships, reimbursements for disabled students and licensure tests of students, and the allocation for miscellaneous expenses of state universities and colleges were also realigned and removed from CHED's budget.
Under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, President Rodrigo Duterte is authorized to realign funds for expenses related to coronavirus programs.
CHED opened their online applications for the School Year (SY) 2020-2021 scholarship program (CSP) last March 1. A total of 2,467 scholarship slots are supposed to be available for grabs while the deadline of application is on May 31, 2020.
